It is the sign of the Deathly Hallows.
The Deathly Hallows follows the story of the Peverell brothers, three powerful wizards. One night, they have a river that they can't cross, so they magic up a bridge. Death then appears, and he's angry, because people normally die trying to cross the water. So, to trick the brothers, he tells them that he'll give them each a wish as a reward for being able to avoid him. The first brother asked for a wand that would win any duel, the second asked for a stone that would raise someone from the dead, and the third asked for something that would allow him to go on without Death finding him, so Death gave the third brother his own Cloak of Invisibility. (Eventually, Death takes the first two for his own, and the third gives the cloak to his son and welcomes Death, but that parts irrelevant)
Those three gifts from Death: the Wand (straight line down the middle of the symbol) the Stone (circle) and the Cloak (triangle) make up the Deathly Hallows, and it is believed by some to make the owner of all three items Master of Death.
